Anticipating Christmas 2012

You may have to fast forward through some of this. The cuteness of the singing wears off, and this was a rushed editing job.

goofing around
We got to ride the engine of a real train. It was loud.
He met his Uncle Travis for the first time.

We haven't confiscated the Elmo shirts. oy.
He developed a crush on Travis' girlfriend, Brooke.
Atticus was very sad to say goodbye to everyone. He gave tight, fierce hugs and shed some tears. He said to me, "They (Uncle Travis and Brooke) miss me already" and "Nanny misses me already." (Somehow I didn't end up with a photo of him and Nanny. Perhaps in the video...)

Atticus has been obsessed lately with talking about what behaviors aren't nice and so deserving of time out. Every time I complain about another driver, which I suppose I do a lot, he says the car needs time out. Many of the characters in the nursery rhymes we read need time out too.

He's gotten pretty good at counting. It seems like he understands what he's doing--that he isn't just reciting numbers.

Still, he adores Ava. She's all he ever talks about when one asks him about school. She's only there two days a week, so when I ask him about his day on days when she's not there, he promptly informs me that Ava was at home. I have to pry to get him to tell me anything else about his day besides Ava's absence. They're super cute--walking around the playground together hand in hand. The other day she brought a giant sticker to school for him. She came over and started to hand it to him, and another kid tried to intercept it, so she fought the boy off and stuck the sticker on Atticus's belly.

And he still adores trains. They're almost all he ever plays with. He loves playing guitar too though right now he doesn't have one. I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a decent young child's guitar. He broke the first one he owned. It was cheap--from the fair. I've ordered several more since, but they were flimsy too, so I sent them back. The nicer ones seem to be exceptionally nicer and exceptionally more expensive, and I worry he's too young for those--that he might decide to throw them or bash them into wall (a fairly likely possibility). If anybody has a good guitar recommendation for someone his age, I'd like to hear it.

He loves chocolate and cake. When he gets chocolate he will often get a bowl for it and savor it, even if there are only two small pieces. Sometimes he'll save it for so long he forgets all about it. Cake is another story. At our neighbor's birthday party the other weekend, he devoured a giant piece of cake in less than a minute, I swear. He made a spectacle of himself shoving huge fistfulls into his mouth.

We went to Meet Me at Maynard's this week. We ran through the rattlesnake bridge with Atticus in the jogging stroller. He said the rattling sound was funny (Atticus thinks a lot of things are funny. He's full of joy). He checked out the playground on the way back. Then we ate burgers, fries, and mac and cheese. Atticus got to stay out until past 8, a little late for him, but he had a blast.

He's very excited about traveling to see his various family members in upcoming months.

Atticus's teacher said that when she asks the kids to help clean up, Atticus is the only one to volunteer. Then she'll often say something to him about how the other kids aren't helping, and he responds by shouting, "Clean up!" and they all obey him.

She's also told me about how annoyed he looks when other kids are whining and crying.

I neglected to pack a morning snack the other day for our drive to school (it seems ridiculous that I should ever need to pack one considering it's a 10-minute car ride and we often eat breakfast just before leaving the house, but no matter), and Atticus said he was hungry; so I dug into my lunch and gave him my cheese stick. He gobbled that up and asked for more food, so I offered him my apple. He said he'd like it. As I was looking for the apple, I joked about how he was eating all my food and that I wouldn't have any lunch. His face became sort of stricken, and he refused the apple. He said "No, that's mama's apple." I tried to reassure him that I'd been kidding and that I was happy to give it to him, but he wouldn't take it.

He's been helping so much with cooking and chores. At his suggestion we made buckwheat breakfast cake two days in a row last week. He also helped me make ratatouille last weekend and pumpkin muffins last night.
