Surprise for Atticus (video)

Who could have guessed today would be Atticus's first snow?

Atticus Surprise

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

My second attempt to introduce Atticus to coloring with crayons failed, as did the first attempt. Straight to the mouth they went. I brushed and picked at his teeth to remove the remaining wax, and while I was doing that, he decided he'd like to climb into the sink and take a sitz bath. I expect some blue and green chunks in his diaper tomorrow.

Today I trespassed into the tot lot in the neighborhood next to ours so that Atticus could swing in the toddler swing for the first time. He was thrilled, and proud I think, to be swinging all on his own. I'll have to bring my phone to get a picture next time. He cried quite a bit when I took him out of it--even after twenty minutes of swinging! But then he was quiet in the jogging stroller as I ran us home.

At home, he fed me a whole bowl full of puffs. The few puffs that he did put into his own mouth, he proceeded to take out of his mouth and feed to me as well. Let me tell you, one puff doesn't seem so bad, but a bowl full is pretty nasty. I don't get the appeal.

Then after dinner (of real food--not puffs), I took him to the gym to watch Chris's basketball game. Atticus enjoyed being there while the guys were warming up. He crawled around the seemingly endless expanse of floor. He pushed around a basketball. He kept chasing after daddy despite that he was busy shooting and dribbling. As soon as the game begun, he was ready to go home. The whistles, the grunts and footfalls of men, the little girls chearleading... it was all too much for him.

On another note (and future Atticus, I'm sorry if this is too much information), Atticus has a most unfortunate habit of experiencing the majority of his bowel movements in his sleep. This is not a good situation for either one of us, as you might imagine. Some mornings he's awoken as early as 5 and can't fall back to sleep after I change him. Other mornings, I change him at 4ish, and he does go back to sleep, but the diaper change is horrendous. That kid puts up a fight like you wouldn't believe, even though it's clear he's not happy in the dirty diaper and won't fall back to sleep unless I change it. He cries and screams almost to the point of hyperventilating. He kicks so hard that it's almost impossible to keep his legs out of the dirty diaper, not to mention I end up getting kicked in the face from time to time as I'm trying to clean him up. And it's not just the mornings either. It happens during his afternoon nap too. It's funny when it's not maddening.
Last night, during half time, Atticus dived out of the bath tub and onto the floor like a little seal. I don't know how he accomplished this. I was monitoring him, I swear. I was sitting on the floor right next to the bath tub. He practically landed in my lap, but didn't. I guess I looked away for a second? It was beyond startling--as if pigs had rained from the ceiling.

He was fine. He just barely hit his face, landing mostly on a towel. We were both startled for a second there. Once I was sure he was fine, I laughed my head off.

Attics greets Dad (video)

Atticus greets Dad
Atticus always gets excited when I come home.  It's pretty special.

One of my favorite images of Atticus thus far is him standing at the edge of his crib, holding the curtain back so that he can gaze out the window. I found him that way this morning (and another morning earlier this week). I didn't even know he was awake, but had gone in his room to wake him up myself since it was 7. He hadn't made a peep. He was just enjoying a new morning ritual of looking out onto the world. Makes my heart melt.

Atticus Blinking (video)

Atticus Blinking

food update

Atticus loves meat. He loves salmon (which he had for the first time this week), chicken, and turkey. Those are the three meats he's tried thus far anyhow. When there's meat on his tray, he eats every last piece of it (or almost) before moving on to the other offerings.

He also loves broccoli, bananas, blueberries, yogurt, and anything bread- or cracker-like (e.g., bread, oatmeal cookies, cheerios, rice crackers, rice waffles, teething biscuits).

He tasted cantaloupe, lentils, and onions for the first time this week. All seemed to meet his approval.

Tonight I made him broccoli cheese 'nuggets.' I combined broccoli, cheddar cheese, egg yolks, bread crumbs, oregano, basil, and pepper; molded them into balls; and baked them. He liked (as did Chris and I).

And has it really only been a little over a month since Atticus stopped sleeping in our bed? It feels like it's been so much longer, not that I'm complaining. A baby who sleeps through the night in his own bed is a lovely, lovely thing.
